Fashioncore is a pejorative term used for band (music)|bands/musicians viewed as non-substantial or derided Emo (slang)|emo, hardcore punk|hardcore or, more frequently, metalcore musicians and their fans. As is usually the case with condescension in subcultures, it is often used by veterans of a particular scene, in this case, the hardcore/metalcore one. Fashioncore is often seen as involving the image that the group in question projects or the styles and attitudes that its fans adopt, than the sound of the music itself. Many bands labeled fashioncore sound similar to those with which they are derisively compared. Bands commonly referred to as fashioncore or making fashioncore music include Atreyu, From Autumn to Ashes, Eighteen Visions, and Aiden. The origins of the term come from the fashion many of these bands' adherents adopted, coupled with the "-core" suffix. Fashioncore bands are often followed by "scene" or hipster people, which in the hardcore/metalcore subculture has come to mean someone who pays excessive attention to fashion, with males often adopting effeminate looks, long hair and women's pants, and girls wearing elaborate hair and makeup, reminiscent of the drag (clothing)|drag and glam fashions of earlier musical subcultures. In addition, many who fall under this classification are known to spend an excessive amount of time on and communicating through the Internet, via instant messaging, blogging, or online communities such as MySpace. The people following the scene also have to get used to things going out of fashion very quickly, whether it be clothes, music or hair. Anyone falling behind will most probably be rejected from that particular social clique. Although still considered a very derogatory term, fashioncore is now more commonly used to refer to music fans who adopt the style(s) rather than bands themselves. Furthermore, fashioncore followers are now found in nearly every genre of music, however hardcore punk and indie rock still tend to be the core genres followed by these fans.
