Margaret Turnbull is an American astronomer and a NASA Astrobiology Institute postdoctoral research associate at the Department of Terrestrial Magnetism, Carnegie Institution of Washington. In 2002 Turnbull developed the HabCat along with Jill Tarter http://www.nasa.gov/vision/universe/newworlds/HabStars.html, a catalogue of potentially habitable solar systems. The following year Turnbull went on to further identify 30 particularly suitable stars from the 5 000 on the HabCat list that are within 100 light years of Earth (see, for instance, 18 Scorpii, and 37 Geminorum). This shortlist provided part of the basis for the stellar targets for the Allen Telescope Array; it was created in discussion with scientists working toward the Terrestrial Planet Finder and will likely also provide a starting-point for this planned program http://www.solstation.com/habitable.htm.
Turnbull is an authority on "Hab Stars," solar twins http://www.astrobio.net/news/modules.php?op=modload&name=News&file=article&sid=794 and planetary habitability. She teaches at the University of Arizona.
