Menorrhagia is an abnormally heavy and prolonged menstruation|menstrual period. This is often due to excessive build up of the womb lining (the endometrium) but may be due to a spontaneous abortion or fibroid tumours. Endometrial carcinoma usually causes irregular bleeding, rather than menorrhagia. The condition can often be treated with the Contraception|contraceptive pill. A normal menstrual cycle is 21-35 days in duration, bleeding lasting an average of 7 days and flow between 25 and 80 mL. Often no cause can be found for menorrhagia. Sometimes there is a structural irritation in the womb, e.g. when fibroids or fibromyomas are present in the womb or the woman has an intrauterine device. med-stub Category:Gynecology es:Menorragia This article is licensed under the GNU Free Documentation License.
