The acronym PROM is a medical term loosely used for all of the following: preterm, prelabor, or prolonged rupture of membranes (ROM). Prelabor ROM refers to cases where the amniotic membranes of a pregnant mother rupture before labor Contraction (childbirth)|contractions begin. PPROM or pPROM refers to preterm, prelabor ROM, where membranes rupture before the 38th week of gestation as well as occurring before contractions begin.
