Post-abortion syndrome (PAS), also known as post-traumatic abortion syndrome and abortion trauma syndrome, is a controversial supposed mental disorder, that is alleged to afflict women following an elective abortion and has been a part of some pro-life information campaigns. It is not considered to be a medical condition by the medical community at large.ref|Stotland It is also not defined as psychiatric condition in the DSM-IV-TR or ICD-10, and only limited evidence exists in the medical literature to suggest that abortion has long-term psychological consequences.ref|Kero
Since the supposed syndrome (a constellation of sign (medicine)|signs and symptoms) is not recognized, no formal medical definition exists. It is typically characterized as being similar to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and the term abortion trauma syndrome is used by abortion opponents to imply that connection.ref|Stotland #note|StotlandStotland NL.
