Though her mother named her Shalom, meaning "peace" in Hebrew language|Hebrew, her family is not of Jewish descent. She was discovered at a Cure concert in Toronto, Canada and started modeling straight out of high school. She has since appeared on numerous magazine covers, been in shows for fashion designers such as Ralph Lauren and Donna Karan, appeared in movies and co-hosted MTV's House of Style with friend and fellow supermodel Amber Valletta. Harlow is a vegetarian and the spokeperson for Chanel's Coco fragrance.
