Thrift Store Chic became popular in fashion during the late 1980s and early 1990s as the grunge movement was building more and more of a fan base. Indie (music)|Indie and College rock|College Rock were emerging from the underground, and thrift store fashion was seen as an anti-fashion statement. The clothes were cheap and were often vintage throwbacks.
Singers like Kurt Cobain, Courtney Love and Eddie Vedder all seemed to sport the anti-fashion, thrift store chic look in the mid '90s. Love's babydoll dresses became her trademark and a sought-after piece in thrift stores. Flannel shirts, polyester pants and everything in between became "chic" without trying to.
