A
mood swing
is an extreme or rapid change in
mood
.
Mood swings are commonly associated with
mood disorders including
bipolar disorder (manic depression) and
depression
. Another major factor in mood swings can be hyperactivity or hyperactivity/inattentiveness as is sometimes seen in
ADHD. More commonly mood swings can be a result of dealing with daily life.
Other causes of mood swings are due to hormonal changes that can temporarily upset brain chemistry. As the
hormones involved normalize, these mood swings generally subside on their own.
